Interview with David Rust for ASOT CZ
Hi David, in an interview for On the Sesh, you said you’re not a fan of 14-minute “pure trance” breakdowns… For fans who do not know you, what can they expect from you?
Ahoj Czech Trance Family, For those who have not heard of me already you can expect the hardest, toughest sounds in Trance, I like to play a mixture of Tech-Trance, Psy Trance, Hard Trance and even a little bit of the more driving styles of uplifting to deliver an energetic dancefloor experience. For me personally, my sound is all about Energy.

How do you pick up the next track you wanna play in your set? Is it influenced by the fans on the dancefloor, or do you have an idea in advance about what you’re going to play?
I always like to plan out my intro track so I know where I am going to start off but I generally read from the crowd when playing, I find that planning too much isn‘t very effective as you don‘t know the crowd will want especially an international crowd I have never experienced before.
You have been inspired by Simon Patterson, John O’Callaghan, and other DJs. Which tracks have you influenced the most?
My earlier experiences came from Tech-Trance tracks around 2004–2010, I was massively inspired by tracks like Marco V – Indicator, Simon Patterson – Bulldozer, Fred Baker – Lunar Eclipse. Tracks like these ones all had really awesome dark techno grooves, amazing melodies and really hard drops this was the sound that I always preferred and took the most inspiration from.
You already have a couple of releases, do you also think about the album or the establishment of your own record label?
Yes for sure, A label and brand are something I will look into in a few years time, For the time being, I want to establish myself as an artist first then focus on bringing my brand ideas to life. An Album is most definitely something I would like to achieve in the future also.
So, what do you want to accomplish in your career? What is your ultimate goal?
I just want to keep doing what I love doing, Every year gets better and better getting to play bigger and better shows. I am very grateful of the opportunities I have been given and I can‘t really ask for much more although I would love to get to play in every country around the world as I love to travel and see new sights, I‘m thrilled that I am getting to play in the Czech Republic for the first time.

Were we honored to have an interview with your girlfriend Kristy Jay, how do you influence each other’s career? Do you inspire each other?
Kristina is my biggest inspiration now and keeps me positive through the toughest of times. I left my home country of Scotland to live in Slovakia 6 months ago with her so we could pursue our dreams together if it wasn‘t for her I don‘t think I would be working so hard and inspired to get to where I want us to be. To have a partner who understands the scene and is involved helps a lot. We are a team.
How do you think trance & progressive music will develop in the following years? Do you wish it to evolve in a certain direction? Which one?
Well over the past few years I think Psy has become a massive part of the mainstream trance scene, I would hope to see Tech-Trance making a resurgence in the same way as there are a lot of amazing pioneering artists making really cool original music in the scene at the moment. Would be awesome to see it rise in popularity again.
